Marriage in Korea is increasingly becoming an obstacle course in which a couple have to maneuver the difficulties posed by dowries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

The difficulties of farming made it necessary for men to handle the work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and this led to the rising power of males in these societies. Societies in the South Pacific islands and in sub-Saharan Africa practice customs where the groom pays a dowry to the bride's family. These regions are home to primitive forms of farming that use hoes or picks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the work is usually done by women,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leading to a higher status for them.
In Korea, the time-honored custom is for couples to exchange valuable items as a matrimonial pledge. After the late Chosun Dynasty and the dissolution of the class system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a new class of wealthy people emerged who began to exchange ever more lavish gifts ahead of marriage in order to distance themselves from their poor backgrounds. The practice of bringing bridal gifts after sunset apparently stemmed from old efforts to dodge the authorities' inspection by delivering expensive marriage gifts at night.
